A grid tracker checks your Google Maps position from many points across a service area instead of one city-center point, so it shows where in town you rank and where you do not.

How map-grid limits add up: a worked example

Take one business that tracks 10 keywords on a 7x7 grid, scanned weekly. A 7x7 grid has 49 points.

• Local Falcon and Whitespark grids: 49 points x 10 keywords = 490 credits per scan. Whitespark's own estimator assumes 4.33 weekly runs a month, which makes about 2,122 credits. That is just over Whitespark's 2,000-credit tier, so this business needs its $20 tier of 5,000 credits. Local Falcon's 7,500-credit Starter covers three such locations (about 6,365 credits).
• SE Ranking: the limit counts keyword-point pairs, not scans. 49 x 10 = 490 pairs per location, so three locations use 1,470 of the 1,500 included. The help center says you can deactivate grid points to save limits.
• BrightLocal Track: the plan allows a grid for up to 5 keywords, so only half of this list could be mapped. All 10 fit within its 100-keyword rank tracking allowance.

A mistake to avoid is sizing a plan by keyword count alone. Grid size multiplies usage: moving from 7x7 to 9x9 raises each scan from 49 to 81 points.

The help center describes Google Maps as the tracked surface, weekly checks by default, a 15x15 maximum grid and a tracking depth of 20. Local Falcon documents larger grids and Apple Maps.
