SE Ranking vs Screaming Frog: two different kinds of tool

SE Ranking and Screaming Frog SEO Spider are not like-for-like alternatives: Screaming Frog is a desktop website crawler that you install on Windows, macOS or Linux, and SE Ranking is a cloud SEO platform in which Website Audit is one module beside rank tracking, keyword and backlink research, and client reports. Choose Screaming Frog when crawling is the whole job. Choose SE Ranking when the audit is one part of ongoing client work.

Screaming Frog's paid version costs $279 per license per year in the vendor's US dollar price list, as read on 3 October 2026, and each user needs their own license. Its free version crawls up to 500 URLs. The billing basis differs, so compare with care: Screaming Frog sells one-year licenses, while SE Ranking bills monthly or annually. Screaming Frog also discounts volume. In the same US dollar price list, 5 to 9 licenses cost $265 each, so a five-person team pays 5 x $265 = $1,325 a year.

What each tool does that the other does not

• Only in Screaming Frog: custom extraction, which pulls any data from a page's HTML with CSS Path, XPath or regex, and URL mapping to compare a staging site with production. SE Ranking's audit settings documentation lists neither.
• Only in SE Ranking: everything outside the crawl. That means daily rank tracking on Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, keyword and backlink research, and a Report Builder that sends scheduled reports. Its audits run on the vendor's servers on a weekly or monthly schedule and email you when they finish, so no computer of yours has to stay on.

Who should pick Screaming Frog, who should pick SE Ranking, and when you need both

Pick Screaming Frog if you are a technical SEO who audits large or unusual sites, checks migrations from URL lists, or needs custom data pulled from page templates. The vendor says the tool is generally recommended for crawls below 2 million URLs and suggests an SSD and 16GB of RAM for crawls in the millions, so your hardware is part of the cost.

Pick SE Ranking if you report to clients every month and want audits, rankings and reports in one login. Core's 250,000 pages a month is shared by every project in the account, so one very large site can use the whole allowance. Use both when the work has two phases: a one-off deep crawl in Screaming Frog for a migration or template audit, then SE Ranking for scheduled health checks, rank tracking and reporting afterwards.

What moving audit work between the two tools involves

There is nothing to import between them. Each tool crawls the site again from scratch, and issue lists will not match one for one: Screaming Frog says it checks for over 300 issues, while SE Ranking's own pages give different counts for its audit (115+ on one page, 120+ on another).

1. In SE Ranking, set the source of pages (site pages, subdomains, XML sitemap or your own list), the page limit and the crawl speed. The documented default is 5 requests per second.
2. Turn on JavaScript rendering if the site loads its main content with JavaScript. The help center says the audit is incomplete on such sites without it.
3. Export what you need from Screaming Frog before a license lapses.
