What Semrush and Ahrefs each track on their entry plans
You do not need both Semrush and Ahrefs to track rankings. Semrush's SEO plan tracks 500 keywords daily across 5 websites, and Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 keywords weekly across 5 projects, so either one covers the job alone.
Both list research, audit and rank tracking. Semrush's SEO plan names Position Tracking, Site Audit and basic keyword research and competitor analysis; Ahrefs Lite names Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker. Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month billed monthly, as read on 7 October 2026. Semrush's page showed no US-dollar price that day.
Ahrefs Lite keeps 6 months of historical data, includes 1 user and lists API and MCP access; 2 more users are $40 a month each.

Start an SE Ranking trial →Where the two overlap and where they differ
The two overlap on rank tracking, audits and research, and differ on update speed and entry terms. Semrush updates rankings daily; Ahrefs updates weekly on every plan. Semrush has a free plan limited to one website and 10 keywords in Position Tracking; Ahrefs runs no discounts.
Semrush's own steps for tracking are to enter keywords, add up to 20 competitors and set up emailed reports, and its pricing page lists extra users and white-label reports as add-ons rather than plan features.
SE Ranking is a third all-in-one route: its Core plan lists rank tracking, research and audit together.
When paying for two tools makes sense
A second subscription pays off for data the first one does not have. SE Ranking says its own search volume figures currently trail both Semrush and Ahrefs, so a team that buys a tool mainly for search volume has a reason to keep one of them.
A no-cost second view also exists: Ahrefs Free, which Ahrefs offers to website owners, and the Semrush free plan. Ahrefs lists Looker Studio integration from its Advanced plan, not on Lite or Standard, so for a reporting gap the first question is which Ahrefs plan, not whether to add a second suite. For options beyond these two, see Semrush alternatives and Ahrefs alternatives.
One platform instead of two: SE Ranking
SE Ranking Core puts daily rank tracking, a website audit and keyword, competitor and backlink research in one plan for $129 a month billed monthly, or $103.20 a month billed annually, per SE Ranking's FAQ page and the 5 October 2026 capture of its US pricing page; the SE Ranking vs Semrush vs Ahrefs table sets the three entry plans side by side.
SE Ranking's FAQ describes its value as consolidating rank tracking, research, audits, reporting and local SEO into one subscription instead of paying for several tools. It also says it gives data and recommendations but does not implement changes on your site.
Pick SE Ranking when one subscription for tracking, audit and research is enough; Core allows 10 projects, each one website with its own rankings, competitors and audits, and lists Data Studio, Matomo, GA and Search Console integrations. Pick Semrush or Ahrefs on its own for a team that relies on search volume data.
How to decide inside a week
An in-house marketer weighing a yearly renewal can load the same keyword list into the trials that exist. To test the one-platform route, SE Ranking's 14-day trial covers tracking, an audit and research without a card, with up to 10 projects, 750 tracked keywords a day and 20 AI prompts a day.
Semrush's seven-day trial needs a card, with a nominal charge refunded at once. Ahrefs has no trial, and Ahrefs Free is its no-cost route for website owners.
